Mission and Vision

Our Mission

We are a coalition of Catholic health ministries,
informed by our faith and values,
which through knowledge transfer, advocacy, and partnerships,
advances excellence in palliative care.

Our Vision

We envision a society in which all persons living with or affected by a chronic or life threatening condition receive compassionate, holistic, coordinated care.  This will include relief of pain, suffering and other symptoms from the time of diagnosis throughout the process of living and dying.  Such excellent care will be provided according to need, respecting the values and goals of individuals, their families and other loved ones.  It will assist them to live fully in community and will support survivors in their bereavement.  Through such care, we believe that God’s healing love is revealed.

Our Guiding Principles

Supportive Care Coalition: Pursuing Excellence in Palliative Care has adopted and is guided by the Shared Statement of Identity for Catholic Health Ministry of the Catholic Health Association of the United States, which read:

As Catholic health care, we are a ministry of the church continuing Jesus' mission of love and healing today. As provider, employer, advocate, citizen—we bring together people of diverse faiths and backgrounds. Our ministry is rooted in our belief that every person is a treasure, every life a sacred gift, every human being a unity of body, mind, and spirit.

This commitment to promoting and defending human dignity means that, individually and collectively, we foster healing, act with compassion, and promote wellness for all persons and communities, with special attention to our neighbors who are poor, underserved, and most vulnerable.

Catholic health facilities provide compassionate, high-quality care to patients and residents—and their families and loved ones—addressing the needs of their bodies, minds, and spirits. Catholic health facilities and systems reach outside their walls into the communities they serve to foster health and well-being.

As Catholic health ministry, we share a special commitment to the poor and vulnerable. We are driven to advocate to protect the fundamental rights of all individuals and to change the social conditions that perpetuate poverty, injustice, and discrimination. Because we believe in justice for all, we work to achieve programs that meet basic human needs, including accessible and affordable health care, full participation of all in society, equitable distribution of societal resources, and contribution of all to the common good.

Our mission, in accordance with Catholic social teaching and values, calls us to serve as advocates for all, particularly the poor and other vulnerable populations. We believe that health care is a basic human right. To that end, health care should be considered an essential building block for a just and free society, just as education is. As the Catholic health ministry, we are committed to moving the nation toward a more just and equitable health care system that ensures health care for all.

We believe creation is a gift and that we must use all resources responsibly.

Catholic health care is an essential element of the mission of the church in the world and acts in harmony with the institutional church.
