SSM Health Care owns, manages and is affiliated with 20 acute care hospitals and three nursing homes in four states - Wisconsin, Missouri, Oklahoma and Illinois.  Sponsored by the Franciscan Sisters of Mary, SSM continues a healing ministry that began with the sisters in St. Louis in 1872.

Through SSM Health Care's system-wide Palliative Care Initiative, Coordinating the Care of Patients with Advanced Illness, the system goal is to achieve excellence in palliative care by relieving suffering and improving quality of life while applying appropriate treatments to patients with advanced illnesses. 

For patients being treated by three or more physicians, SSM facilities utilize care conferences to facilitate communications between patients and their families and the health care team regarding patient/family values and resources, pain management issues, goals of care and a transition or discharge plan.
