Message From CHA President: Health Reform More Essential Than Ever
Catholic Health World, February 1, 2010
CHA President and CEO Sr. Carol Keehan, DC, issued the following statement on health reform in the wake of this week’s special election: “Amid the flurry of explanations, accusations and purported motivations for the victory of Senator-Elect Scott Brown in Massachusetts, some have decided it means the American people have rejected health reform. Uncritical acceptance of this is dangerous to the health of the American people.  Even a cursory review of reality today demonstrates the continued need to significantly improve our healthcare delivery and financing system.” Read the full article online.

World Day of the Sick
Since 1992, the Catholic Church has celebrated World Day of the Sick on February 11 — the day on which the church commemorates the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes — under the sponsorship of the Pontifical Council for Health Pastoral Care. World Day of the Sick has three consistent themes:

  • First, it reminds the faithful to pray intensely and sincerely for those who are sick.
  • Second, the celebration invites Christians to reflect on and respond to human suffering.
  • Third, this day recognizes and honors all persons who work in health care and serve as caregivers.

Our Mission
We are a coalition of Catholic health ministries informed by our faith and values, which through knowledge transfer, advocacy, and partnerships advances excellence in palliative care.

Our Vision
We envision a society in which all persons living with or affected by a chronic or life threatening condition receive compassionate, holistic, coordinated care. This will include relief of pain, suffering and other symptoms from the time of diagnosis throughout the process of living and dying. Such excellent care will be provided according to need, respecting the values and goals of individuals, their families and other loved ones. It will assist them to live fully in community and will support survivors in their bereavement. Through such care, we believe that God's healing love is revealed.
